Guardians Of The Coast (Mangroves In Rookery Bay, Florida)

These funky trees are pretty cool. Stick around as I introduce you to Rookery Bay, a National Estuary Research Reserve in Florida, and the resilience of mangroves.

Visiting Rookery Bay

I’m currently on my five-month trip through the United States with my family. We have plans to visit over 20 national parks this summer, and I want to take you along on the journey. 

Our first ecological stop was in Rookery Bay, a National Estuary Research Reserve. I wanted to learn more about the delicate and resilient ecosystem of mangroves. These silly-looking trees have an important role in the local ecosystem and also in mitigating climate change.

The indigenous people of this land, called the Calusa, who inhabited much of coastal Southwest Florida, including Rookery Bay, nurtured and were active suits of this ecosystem for centuries. It’s important to me to mention that this is their land, and I’m only a visitor with the fortunate opportunity to experience this nature for myself.

About the conservancy 

The conservancy was founded in 1964 when a small group of concerned citizens fought to protect the natural beauty of the ecosystem. 

I was surprised to learn that the conservation story was very much a grassroots effort. Students from the local school system went door-to-door to save money to purchase the land from developers. The reserve is now one of Florida’s largest most respected regions of natural beauty, over 110,000 acres! 

Why mangroves are so cool

Mangroves are pretty cool, but they’re rather rare, and only in certain areas of the world. 

There are 60 different species of mangrove trees, growing along waterlogged coastlines in tropical and sub-tropical regions. They are made up of four tree species in Florida: red mangrove, black mangrove, white mangrove, and buttonwood. 

Here are three reasons why mangroves are paramount to safeguarding coastal ecosystems and mitigating climate change.

1. Hurricanes and flooding protect

They’re incredibly cool plants. Not only can they thrive in saltwater environments, but their strong and complex root systems protect coastal communities and wildlife from wind and storms.

2. Carbon capture

The increase of human-led activities has increased carbon production beyond our planet’s ability to restore itself. We need natural solutions to remove the excess carbon from the atmosphere, which means scaling up the preservation of mangroves and forests. Why mangroves? 

Because they’re major carbon suckers!

They can capture and store carbon. The muddy soil around mangroves is carbon-rich, and over time, the mangroves store and hold the carbon in place. Mangroves are estimated to store 4 times more carbon than tropical forests.

The importance of these trees for mitigating climate change is obvious — but don’t forget that they also host shelter and refuge for countless species of fish, crabs, and such – giving them shelter and a place to raise their young.

What you can do to save mangroves

By now, you see how cool mangroves are and their importance to life on our planet.

Here are three ways that you can take action today to preserve current and future mangroves:

  1. Donate to conservation efforts. You can find local conservation efforts like the Coastal Watch Adopt-A-Mangrove program.
  2. Share your ‘mangrove’ knowledge. If you love marine ecosystems like me, share with others the importance of mangroves and why they’re so important.
  3. Advocate locally. If you live in regions like Florida, advocate politically to stop unsustainable coastal development, poor water discharge, and irresponsible fishing and aquaculture practices.
