We all have a part to play in building a more just, sustainable, and better future for everyone. As a marketer, you have a vital role in the sustainability movement.
Learn how you can start contributing to it today!
Harness your marketing superpowers
Marketers have superpowers.
You can hit the brakes on mass consumerism, resulting in less plastic pollution, and better labor rights.
You have the creative ability to guide people towards what they truly desire — happiness, time in nature, and human connection — and not lead them towards depression and loneliness.
Your superpowers can have a positive influence and propel change. They can paint a future where a more sustainable world is achievable for everyone!
Where the narrative started
Marketers and communicators have been sitting on the sidelines for too long. Regarding sustainability, we’ve often thought that this topic is for leadership or the sustainability department.
I’m here to tell you that we need you to use your creative powers for good.
The narrative started at the Cannes conference in 2019. It was here where the Extinction Rebellion group wrote an open letter to the advertising and marketing industry warning them of the Sixth Mass Extinction.
It sounds ominous (and it is). The Sixth Mass Extinction claimed to be partly driven by advertising and how we’ve been convincing people to buy stuff that they don’t need and be someone that doesn’t make them happy.
That letter asked one important question: Are marketers and creatives the manipulators and architects of this consumerism frenzy?
My answer: Yes, marketers and creatives are partly responsible for the current state of the planet, and we need to start taking responsibility.
3 ways you can show up for people and the planet
To define what it means to be a modern marketer, I dubbed the term ecomarketer, to help communicators apply a sustainability lens to their work.
Showing up for people and the planet every day in your career — is a great way to be an ecomarketer!
- Understand sustainable lifestyles — A lot of research has been conducted in recent years that describes what people truly desire. Take this research and incorporate it into your marketing work. Create creative stories that harness nature, community connection, and happiness — and center these narratives around selling your product or service.
- Awareness of climate and sustainability — This topic is complex and multi-faceted. Many citizens have no clue what the Sustainable Development Goals are, much less, that they contribute to their personal well-being. Marketers can educate people on the sustainable future that we’re building by bringing awareness to topics that matter. Center these topics around your company’s purpose and sustainability objectives.
- Challenge business as usual — The way we run business and marketing campaigns with no regard for Earth’s finite resources and the people who live on it — no longer can be part of the narrative. When you’re given a brief that doesn’t align with the SDGs, challenge that brief and be the change!
