As your feet cross the cobblestones of Quedlinburg, Germany, you can’t help but be transported back in time.
The half-timbered roofs of this northern German town is every bit of a German fairytale. I tell my German friends that this perfect pictured town is what every American dreams of seeing in Germany and what many of us think Germany consists of being.
They usually laugh at these words, but I will let you be the judge. These photos will have you dreaming of this perfect German town and adding it to your travel list.
Quedlinburg rests on the edge of the Harz mountains, which is a medium mountain range west-south of Berlin.
With a short three-hour trip from Berlin by bus, I found myself stepping onto these fairytale cobblestone roads and exploring the town of Quedlinburg.
My first impression was quietness. It was mid-summer, high-peak season for tourists and Quedlinburg was silent. I had arrived on a Saturday early afternoon and many of the individuals walking the streets were locals.
Tourism seemed to have avoided the small town. It was the beginning of a relaxing and charming birthday weekend.
I roamed the streets of Quedlinburg taking in the various sights and photos of the half-timbered roofs.
For a magnificent view, I climbed the hill to the Romanesque-style Church of St. Servatius. From here, the view of the valley opened up to rolling green farm fields, fluffy clouds and land for as far as the eye could see.
I don’t usually like to compare countries, but the rooftops of this town reminded me of the Italy’s tuscany.
My weekend in Quedlinburg was spent sipping wine, eating flammkuchen, and soaking in the gigantic tub in my hotel room.
I purposely chose my small flat, because it had a great location and bathtub. I took a total of 4 baths during my 3-day stay. I enjoyed it throughly.
Quedlinburg is the perfect town to do as a day trip from Berlin. You can cross the town in less than 15-minutes, then sit in the cafes and take pictures of the small roads.
If you’re looking for an escape into old Germany, this is the perfect town to start.
